Trump's Controversial Plan for World Cup Visitors to Disclose Social Media Histories Labeled as 'Alarming'

A newly proposed mandate for World Cup supporters traveling to the United States to disclose personal online profile details has been called "profoundly unacceptable."

Compulsory Submission for Visa Waiver Travelers

According to the proposal, visitors from 42 countries—including the UK—who use the visa waiver program would be obliged to submit details about online accounts they have maintained in the last five-year period. Previously, submitting this information was optional.

"These announced plans are profoundly unacceptable," said Ronan Evain, executive director of Football Supporters Europe. "Freedom of expression and the right to privacy are universal human rights. No supporter surrenders those rights just because they enter a country."

He added, "The measure introduces a climate of fear of monitoring that fundamentally opposes the welcoming, open spirit the tournament is supposed to represent and it must be rescinded at once."

Roots in an Previous Presidential Directive

The proposal follows an executive order issued by former President Trump in early 2025 that aims "to guarantee that all aliens wishing to enter the United States are vetted and screened to the maximum degree possible."

Government Response and Justification

A spokesperson for the border agency provided context on the issue. "Nothing has changed on this subject for those coming to the United States," the official stated. "This is not a implemented policy, it is merely the first step in initiating a process to have new policy options to protect the American people secure."

The representative added, "We are continuously evaluating how we screen those coming into the country, particularly after the recent incident in Washington DC. This new proposal is in line with the earlier Executive Order to thoroughly check those who are coming into this country using the visa waiver system by enabling CBP to collect additional information from foreign nationals using the ESTA program."
