Homeland Security personnel have descended on Charlotte as part of the Trump administration's intensifying crackdown on undocumented immigration, according to government announcements.

The operation, called "Operation Charlotte's Web", was revealed on Saturday, with authorities stating that "undocumented criminals" would be primary subjects in the urban area.

"We are surging DHS law enforcement to Charlotte to ensure Americans are safe and public safety threats are removed," a spokesperson stated.

Municipal leaders, including the city's chief executive, issued a joint statement criticising the campaign, saying it was causing "needless concern and instability" in the resident base.

Armoured vehicles and tactical squads could be involved in the local crackdown, according to official records.

Multiple congregants working on grounds at a church in east Charlotte fled into woods when officers appeared, with one man being apprehended, according to reports.

"We assumed the religious facility was protected and we would be undisturbed," a young bystander told reporters.

Since Trump's return to office, national forces have been deployed to several locations including major metropolitan areas to fulfill the pledge of "the largest deportation programme" in American history.

The Department of Homeland Security said they are implementing the operation because North Carolina has not complied with the around 1,400 ICE persons held, meaning they had been freed due to "sanctuary policies".
