Keith Baker and Keith Baker Are Instructing Classes at Dungeon Master Academy

Since 2018, a specialized event organizer has been hosting immersive events where professional dungeon masters lead Dungeons & Dragons games in historic castles in England and at an American castle venue. These all-inclusive trips are highly favored among forever DMs who seldom have the opportunity to join in the game themselves, and they often ask for tips from the pros on topics ranging from improvisation and crafting riddles to managing conflicts at the table.

In response, the organizers began developing a organized method to address these questions, which led to the establishment of the Dungeon Master Academy. The first session is scheduled for January 2-3, 2026 at a university in Atlanta.

“You can watch thousands of YouTube videos on virtually any subject and acquire valuable insights, but the philosophy was that there’s just no substitute a live, hands-on session alongside fellow DMs, where real-time interaction with seasoned educators and other game masters often in comparable situations and aim to improve their skills,” explained the program's dean.

Course Offerings and Ticket Packages

DMs can opt for options ranging from $995 to $2,500, depending on the amount of contact they desire with the experts. The starting package includes one of four courses:

  • Foundational Skills: Covers the essentials of managing a session.
  • Story Arc Development: Is dedicated to designing extended campaigns.
  • Setting Creation: Emphasizes the crafting of environments.
  • Professional Development: Tailored to game masters who want to learn more about the tabletop profession.

Each course includes eight hours of training split over a weekend.

“The courses are created so that you walk away with usable skills, probably greater confidence, and many practical techniques,” Carl said. “It's more than presentations and they exceed pre-recorded material. These classes that you can attend, gain knowledge from, and then return to your group the next week and put into practice in your local game.”

Seasoned Educators

The majority of workshops are taught by duo of instructors. Setting design is taught by Monte Cook and the creator of Eberron, both teaching the skill of universe design.

Industry advancement presents multiple instructors, such as a puzzle design specialist, an entertainment professional, and a pioneering DM. The expanded teaching staff is intended to provide specialized information to attendees with particular aims.

“Various attendees aim to start their own live gameplay show and share their stories with the world, several aim to release and write original content,” Carl said. “Some just want to ask, What's the path to be a DM at a program like a castle event? Which abilities that I need? Can anyone do it?

Premium Packages

A fifteen hundred dollar premium package includes access to a introductory event, a welcome gift pack, and a half-hour consultation appointment with a teacher. This constitutes the inaugural DMU session, though the organizers has previously run comparable workshops during breaks between adventures at their castle events.

“It would be possible to organize an full two days just on office hours for expert DMs,” Carl mentioned. “I'm not certain if that’s the most effective utilization of all participants' schedule – In my opinion the coursework and the hands-on activities is highly beneficial – but I suspect it’s going to be one of the most popular parts of the program.”

The $2.5K platinum tier provides an hour of one-on-one time and the opportunity to manage an adventure for five players plus an instructor, who will then give comments and guidance.

“The purpose is for the instructor to evaluate whatever the DM is focused on: I have difficulty with improv or I get blocked in specific fight encounters. May I present a situation for you and get feedback on my areas of proficiency and challenge?” Carl explained. “Perhaps they want to get feedback and advice on a definite universe that they’ve been building.”

Next Steps

Responses from the first event will help shape upcoming academy workshops. Carl suggested that likely modifications could include expanding one-on-one sessions, making it longer to a longer period, or experimenting with varied class arrangements.

“I expect that we conduct these frequently,” Carl said. “I really want to see multiple Dungeon Master Universities in a given year, in different cities, and in various nations. The feedback has been really terrific. We're extremely satisfied with current developments and I think it would be amazing to be able to organize these in collaboration with major events.”
