Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track directly in front of him

The dangerous situation happened on the third lap when safety workers were observed on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to replace his damaged front wing

Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"

"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals sprinting across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"

Safety Concerns Raised

"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"

"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track track officials can be allowed to just run across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"

Governing Body Reviewing

F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the circumstances

"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was advised that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the regulatory authority

"On lap three, marshals were informed and made ready to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once every vehicle had gone by"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch officials were canceled and a double yellow flag was raised in that zone"
