Synthetic graphics purporting to show Nicolás Maduro in custody after his apprehension by the United States have garnered many millions of views across the internet.

How Fake Pictures of the President Emerged Soon After

Initial inauthentic AI image apparently showing him led off a aircraft emerged a brief time later. The graphic was absent from any verified US channels; it was instead uploaded on X by an account describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

Verification involved the SynthID tool, which found the image was generated or edited with Google AI.

Further AI-generated images began to spread in the following period, appearing to show more angles of Maduro in custody. Noticeable watermarks on these images show they were posted by an Instagram profile called ultravfx.

AI analysis says these additional images were likewise produced using Google AI.

Authentic Image Posted but Fakes Continued

Donald Trump posted the genuine photograph of Nicolás Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. But even after this real photo was released, synthetic images kept circulating but were altered to include the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.

Online investigation show the new fake images were first posted on TikTok by a digital art account. Similarly, the AI-watermark detector confirms these further images were produced with generative artificial intelligence.
