The UK government has placed 11 further countries to its public alert register regarding the risks of methanol poisoning from contaminated spirits.

This expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of reported cases" of toxic alcohol toxicity.

Just last month, authorities had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, after several high-profile cases such as the tragic loss of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that as little as minimal doses of methanol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol often used in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not designed for human consumption.

Although it is inherently formed during the production of beverages, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for drinking through the distillation process.

Yet in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to save money, and since it is tasteless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Authorities' Guidance for Travelers

Authorities official Hamish Falconer stated that all travellers should know the indicators of methanol contamination.

"If you're having drinks abroad, opt for well-known venues and avoid homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the minister advised.

"If something appears suspicious, for example a fatigue that's far more intense than typical or vision problems – get medical help right away."
